Sore Muscles After a Workout? Here’s When to Worry

Is Feeling Sore After a Workout okay?

Feeling sore after a workout is normal,

but how do you know if it’s just regular muscle fatigue or a sign of something more serious?

Muscle soreness can be a natural part of strengthening your body,

but certain symptoms shouldn’t be ignored.

Normal vs. Concerning Soreness

Normal soreness: Occurs 24-48 hours after exercise, known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It feels like stiffness or mild tenderness.

Worrisome pain: If soreness lasts more than a few days, worsens over time, or feels sharp, it may indicate injury.

When to Seek Help

  • Sharp or stabbing pain: Could signal a muscle strain or tear.
  • Swelling or bruising: Indicates possible tissue damage.
  • Joint pain: If discomfort is deep in the joint rather than the muscle, it may be a sign of an issue like tendonitis.

What to Do

Rest the sore area and apply ice if pain persists.

Gentle stretching and foam rolling can ease tightness.

If pain doesn’t improve, see a physiotherapist near you for an evaluation.
